Leopoldine Kolbe was part of The Wiener Werkstätte, a commercial art studio in Vienna known for giving its artists creative autonomy. This was unique in the early 1900s, and resulted in an extraordinary output of designs drawing from movements like Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, traditional folk art. Their work subsequently influenced the flowering patterns of Art Deco style. The Workshop had specially designed facilities for textiles, leatherwork, furniture, jewelry, ceramics, and a print & paint shop. Although founded by men, there were more than 180 women artists who were an influential part of its history. Mostly educated at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, the Workshop gave women the rare opportunity to learn welding, print-making, wood-working, and ceramics.
